hd or blu ray? who is winning?
i hear sony boosting about 2-1 numbers in disc sales, but industry insiders say that its mostly from causal buyers trying out the blu ray on their ps3 and once the sales of the system decrease so will the number in disc sales. i also heard that the individual units not attached to a game system shows a major advantage going to HD. now a new study is showing that the percentage of happy buyers is way higher in HD owners compared to blu ray. seems to me that sony has a slight lead while it has three major studios exclusive to them compared to HDs one studio, but it seems most people feel that blu ray will fail in the long haul with movies, but may become a standard later for gaming. I also saw that HD burners are being released for way cheaper then blu ray ones which could make a huge impact in sales in the near future. what do you all think? i want thought out answers, instead of ones from fans of a system denying anything bad about the one they like.
Blu-ray is winning, and it’s going to win the next format war.
1. Blu-ray movies are outselling HD-DVD movies by a margin of 3:1. HD-DVD was outselling Blu-ray for several months after the PS3 was released, but in about 8 months, Blu-ray have overtaken the lead.
2. For every PS3 sold, that’s 1 Blu-ray player sold. The PS2 pushed DVD, and the PS3 is going to push Blu-ray. Why did movies go from VHS to DVD? Because the PS2 helped to push the format, and the staggering number of PS2 sold convinced movie studios that DVD is the way to go.
3. Sony just lowered the price of the PS3 by 100 bucks, which means more people are going to buy a PS3, which means more Blu-ray players will be in homes. Sony said it expects its PS3 sales to double, while industry analysts expect the PS3 sales to increase by 50%. Either way you look at it, Blu-ray is getting a boost. PS3 sales are not slowing down. It’s going to pick up because of the lower price.
4. Like you said, the top 3 money making studios from last year supports Blu-ray exclusively. Four of the top 5 movie studios from last year supports Blu-ray. This gives Blu-ray a huge advantage over HD-DVD when it comes to watching movies. If people want to watch Spider-Man or Disney movies, they’ll have to go with Blu-ray.
5. Blockbuster and other movie rental stores will only have Blu-ray movies. If you want HD-DVD movies, you’ll have to order it online.
Problems with studies is that it can be manipulated to show bias towards one or another.
What difference does it make whether it’s a casual movie watcher buying Blu-ray movies or the hard-core movie goer buying HD-DVD movies? If the top 3 movie studios are making movies on Blu-ray, that’s going to force the hard core movie watchers to buy Blu-ray movies if they want to watch movies made by Sony, Disney, and 20th Century Fox.
